P和Q的故事

前几天陪儿子读Roald Dahl 的《魔法手指》（The Magic Finger），读到这么一句：

The boys laughed and made faces at me, and Mr. Gregg told me to go home and mind my own P’s and Q’s.

在此处，mind one’s P’s and Q’s是一种口语化表达，指自己的事情，自己的工作。如：

1. 礼貌用语

一种说法，“p’s”指“please”，“q’s”指“thank-yous”。所以“mind your p’s and q’s”就是指“mind your pleases and thank yous”，意即“mind your manners”，指要注意礼貌、注意言行举止。如：Be sure to mind your p's and q's when you visit your aunt this weekend!

2、提醒注意拼写

因为英语中小写的“p”和“q”长相相似，十分容易混淆，因此老师在提醒学生注意书写正确的时候，会说“mind your p’s and q’s”。

在印刷行业，用活字印刷术时，需要把字母反过来排版，印出来的字才是正面的。因为小写字母“p”反过来是“q”，小写字母“q”反过来是“p”，工人在排版时非常容易混淆。“Mind your p’s and q’s”也用来提醒工人注意排版，别搞混这两个字母。后引申出来，还可以表示注意言行举止，须小心的事。如：

3、衣服的称呼

一种说法认为“p”指水手的“pea-coat/ pea-jacket” （水手穿的厚呢短大衣），“q”指“queue/ queue-peruke” （辫子）。Pea-coat是18世纪水手的常见服装，假辫子则是时尚绅士们的常见装扮。

英国剧作家Thomas Dekker在写的戏剧The Untrussing of the Humorous Poet（1602）中有这么一句台词：

Enter Horace in his true attyre, Asinius bearing his Cloake.

这里 “in thy Pee and Kue”就是指当时常见的海军装扮。

4、舞蹈

还有一种说法，认为“p’s and q’s”源自法语。“P”代表法语单词“Pieds”（指脚），“Q”代表单词“queue-peruke”（假发），主要指跳舞的时候要注意不要踩到别人，不要让自己的头发甩到别人。看看当时的男士发型，还真有头发分分钟甩脸的危险。

5、度量单位

也有人认为，“p”和“q”分别代表了“pints”（品脱）和“quarts”（夸脱）。在英国，1夸托为1.14升，相当于2品脱。习语“put a quart into a pint pot”指将某物置于容不下之处，如：

A: "Just sit on my suitcase while I try zipping it again."

A：坐在我的箱子上，我把箱子拉链拉起来。

B: "Oh, quit trying to get a quart into a pint pot."

B: 哦，你是要把这么多行李死命塞进小箱子。

“Mind your p’s and q’s”在酒吧里面就指“mind your pints and quarts”，用于提醒老板或者顾客不要记错了喝酒的量。
